Our Solidarity Letter
Dear DWIB Community and Friends,
In light of the recent and senseless murder of George Floyd, we recognize that many of you are experiencing overwhelming pain, grief, anger, among many other emotions. We are with you. We need to acknowledge that this injustice is NOT an isolated incident. Instead, it is very much rooted in American history and continues to run rampant in our society today. No human being should feel unsafe or lack a sense of belonging in a world that is as much theirs as anyone else's.
If we limit our active support for Black Folx to social media statements and spreading awareness, these devastating patterns will continue. The conversations and actions leading to our momentum are powerful. It is important that this momentum prevails as we move past the current media attention and continue to empower the movement towards equity. It is imperative that we persistently keep one another accountable, not just within our personal circles but also within our communities. It is our duty to speak up. We must avoid complacency at a time like this. We must use our individual privileges to uplift and support marginalized communities. We must check our own implicit biases and continue to educate ourselves as allies. We must read, listen, and elevate voices that have been silenced for too long. This is not a single moment but rather a movement, one that has warranted change for decades. None of this is easy nor is it fast, however, it is desperately needed.
In DWIB, we pride ourselves on diversity being one of the pillars upon which our organization was built. Having always emphasized that we embrace different backgrounds and perspectives, we must stand behind our promises more than ever. We are committed to ensuring that our community feels safe and welcoming to all. We have compiled a list of resources, which you can access here: bit.ly/DWIB_BLM. If you need someone to talk to, feel free to email us at daviswomeninbusiness@gmail.com and we can connect you with a Director from our team. Please don’t hesitate to reach out.
In solidarity and with love,
Davis Women In Business Leadership
